Tefal have been making low fat fryers or Actifrys since 2006 and the Actifry Plus Health Fryer has been around for a long time. They have been a great success and although the overall design has remained largely unchanged, they have a range of products to suit different requirements in terms of size and versatility. What sets Tefal apart from the competition is the top loader design with transparent lid. This is the same throughout the range (except the Delight model) with the benefit that it allows the food to be viewed as it cooks.
The other innovation unique to Tefal is the rating paddles. These stir the food as it cooks thus ensuring even cooking. When not needed (e.g. scones, curry’s etc) they can easily be removed. The paddles and the pan are all non-stick and dishwasher friendly. No other manufacturer as far as we know has used this design. Most go for a front load design which has certain disadvantages.
All Tefal Actifrys are exceptionally well made and spare parts are available meaning that should a particular part fail, you can replace it easily.
We are big fans of the Tefal Actifry Health Fryers and have a dedicated article to help you choose the right Tefal Actifry model for your requirements.
Performance of the Tefal Actifry Plus Health Fryer
The first thing to say about the Tefal Actifry Plus Health Fryer is that is largely the same as its smaller cousin the Actifry ‘Original’. The design of these units have changed little over the years except for minor changes to the timer and labelling. The Plus model allows 1.2Kg of food to be cooked as opposed to the Original which only had a capacity for 1.0Kg. This may not seem much but in our experience, it is a good idea to under fill rather than over fill. This is the same for all models irrespective of manufacturer. The advantage that the plus fryer gives is that you can be sure that it will cook a 1KG batch of chips to perfection. That is still the equivalent of a large bag of frozen chips; easily enough for most 3 or 4 portions. If that is not enough then Tefal have other ranges up to 1.7KG. This is enough for even larger families. For more information see our Which Tefal Actifry article.
In our Chip Test the results were exceptional. Chips are the most difficult for any low fat fryer to deal with as they require a high level of heat with air flow and constant movement. Other Air Fryers cannot provide constant movement (paddles) and rely on the user to manually open the draw mid way through cooking and shake the food. This is not necessary with the Tefal Actifry range due to their paddles. The pans are also large which allows plenty of space resulting in little sticking together of food.
The Chip Tests produced lovely golden brown chips which were crisp on the outside and fluffy on the inside. They were evenly cooked. The frozen chips were even better than the hand cut chips with the french fries being almost indistinguishable from deep fried fries.
It doesn’t end there. Over the years we have used many recipes in the ActiFry range (I must confess to owning one of these myself). Curries, Stews, Scones, Fish, Meat. All of these cook well.
